In Pakistan's phone market, you'll often see two prices for the same model — an "official" price and a cheaper "grey" price. The difference can be PKR 15,000–40,000 for flagships. But what are you actually trading off?
What is a Grey Market Phone?
Grey market phones are imported privately — not through official brand channels. They're legal to own but not registered with PTA, which means they may be blocked if DIRBS regulations tighten.
PTA Approved Phones
- Registered IMEI — won't be blocked by network
- Official warranty through brand service centers
- Software tuned for Pakistani networks (some carriers)
- Higher resale value — buyers prefer PTA-approved
Grey Market Phones
- Significantly cheaper (PKR 15,000–40,000 less)
- No local warranty — international warranty may not be honored
- Risk of IMEI blocking in future regulatory changes
- Lower resale value on platforms like mobilelyft
For daily-use phones you plan to sell within 2 years, always buy PTA-approved. The resale premium typically covers the extra upfront cost.
Our Verdict
If you plan to keep the phone for 4+ years and never sell it, grey market saves money. For everyone else — especially if you value resale — PTA-approved is the smarter choice.
